As a professional chemical drawing software, KingDraw allows you to create chemical structure diagrams and chemical reaction equations. The created content can be easily copied and pasted into Microsoft Office(Word, PowerPoint…), and other documents for convenient recording and usage.

In this tutorial, we demonstrate how to draw chemical equations on the KingDraw PC version.

How to draw ‘Chemical Equations

Chemical equations consist of reactants, products, reaction conditions, and commonly used special symbols, most of which can be entered using the ‘Text Tool’.

· Chemical Formulas — Text Tool

Reactants and products in chemical equations are usually written as chemical formulas, which can be directly entered using the ‘Text Tool’ in KingDraw. The Text Tool supports superscript and subscript input, and the ‘Auto Recognize Subscript’ feature helps us quickly input chemical formulas.

By selecting the ‘Auto Recognize Subscript’ button, the numbers we input will be automatically set as subscripts.

· Reaction Conditions — Text Tool

Reaction conditions can also be entered using the ‘Text Tool’. If there are multiple lines of reaction conditions, we can use the ‘Align Left’, ‘Align Center’, and ‘Align Right’ options in the ‘Text Tool’ to adjust the text formatting.

· Common Reaction Symbols — Text Tool

Common symbols used in reactions, such as the plus sign and special symbols, can be entered using the ‘Text Tool’. The ‘Text Tool’ also supports quick input of four commonly used symbols: ‘↑’, ‘↓’, ‘△’, and ‘℃’. Special symbols can also be copied from web pages or documents and directly pasted into the text input box.

· Arrows — Arrow Tool

In secondary education, organic reactions are represented using arrows, and reversible reactions require the reversible symbol.

The single arrow and reversible symbol (double-sided arrow) can be found in the ‘Arrow Tool’. Right-clicking on the ‘Arrow Tool’ lets you view and select arrow styles. Once selected, click on the canvas to generate the arrow.

When in the ‘Arrow Tool’ mode, hovering over an arrow on the canvas will display adjustment nodes on the graphic. By dragging the ends and middle points of the arrow, you can freely adjust its length, angle, and curvature.

· Alignment — Alignment Tool

After inputting the equation, we can use the ‘Alignment Tool’ and ‘Reaction Formatting’ to improve the aesthetics of the equation.

Using the ‘Selection Tool’, select the reactants, products, equal sign/arrow, and other contents. Then, using the ‘Alignment Tool’, choose ‘Align Vertically Centered’ to make adjustments.
